Describing Rotterdam Centraal station is my part of the project.
I was there Sunday evening, around 21.00/ 21.30. I was travelling from Amsterdam Centraal. When I got there I felt better - I felt at home, mainly because I was very tired and wanted to go home and Rotterdam Centraal is an embodiment of "almost there".

However, it was already pretty late on a Sunday. Even though it is the central station of a metropolis I didn't see many people, which was good for my research.

To be more precise and give you a better overview of what I looked into while I was there - I am going to answer these questions:

My own position in the space:
– What do you see?
I see shops - supermarkets, clothing, cafes, fast food places - relatively equally separated, on both sides of the underground immense hallway that has 15 exits on both sides to the spoors. There are light logos above each shop. All of the shops and cafes were closed.
– How do you move?
In a direct and fast pace. In a straight direction. Knowing where I am going. Looking at the check-out door.
– How does your body feel?
Uneasy, in a hurry. It feels as if it has to shrink a little bit, so that I do not attract attention.

Other people:
– Who is involved?
Person walking alongside me, heading for the check-out door; a group of young people; a woman - running for her train; a cleaner in AH; a few other people that got off the train. There are more men than women during the night.
– Who are the different groups?
One of them is the group of young people, who are laughing, talking and walking, the don’t interact with other people, they are in their own bubble.
– How do they interact?
Groups of young people- stay together, laugh, no-one talks to other people, no-one looks at other people, it is strange and uncomfortable to look other people in the eyes.

– What are their body movement and orientation?
No one is going in a random direction - everyone has a specific destination to go to, so this was strange for me - to be there and look at people. It is both throughout the day and the night times.
– How are they spatially organised?
People who are alone, walk fast. People do not usually invade another person's personal space.

Setting:
– Which architecture and objects are involved?
Modernist, you can see the plan of the building on the side ———>>>>>
The architects: Benthem Crouwel Architects
– What are the details, such as colour codes, materials, temperature, smells etc..? – For who is the space designed?
NS colours are blue and yellow, so there is a lot of them.
Grey - stainless steel, glass, wood, concrete.
It is designed for everyone, not to exclude people, it is a thought-through building with a lot of space area and a lot of places to sit on. Standing outside of it one might feel as if she/he is small compared to the immense building.
– How does the design of the space privilege and/or exclude certain social relations?
Since it is so special and since it is a public space, one cannot be intimate and have sexual relations. It is a good place for art performances.

Rules:
– What are the rules of the places and how are they prescribed?
No fighting, no sexual relations, no breaking, no graffiti, can’t be there if you have not bought a ticket for a train/ work there/ have at least 20 euros on your card. Better to wear a mask,
– Are they visible or invisible?
There are both - no signs on the walls, such as "no smoking", "escalator is one way" but there are no signs like "do not get into a fight" - these are rules that generally apply to all public spaces. There is no rule - do not harass other people - but it is still a thing that noone should do - moral rules that usually no one should cross.

- panic button to the police dept
